There are actually remote military sites like sensors that were built during the Cold War using that sort of tech. It's was much bulkier, of course, and apparently didn't use so much nuclear material that it could go critical. I have to wonder how many of those things are just "lying around" for the military to use in a PA scenario.

Good question, I have come across only 1 thing (chemical detection device) powered by nuclear batteries since I have been in the military and those were built back in the 70's, I wouldn't be surprised if there are alot of devices powered by them that the public and even the military are not usually privy to.

My dad used to work communications and as part of his duties he had to keep the platoon/company/brigade(?) radios going. In order to do that they had some old 1950's stuff that still used vacuum tubes, in case EMP shorted out the transistor stuff. They had to keep that stuff in working order. Must have been a tall order as most vacuum tube manufacturers went out with the 1960's. Comm is all about redundancy and it's usually old tech that will be available after whatever calamity strikes. Unless, of course, it becomes much less expensive to to ramp up modern communications capability. Then you'll have enough give in the system to survive any mass casualty event.
