As a rule of thumb you want several different blades, all serve multiple functions. You should carry a simple folding lock back with a 2" inch blade to be used for normal survival use such as skinning an animal or cutting foraged plants, cutting sticks for animal traps and such. The next is a bowie knife to be used as a tool as well as normal survival uses. You may also want a machete in place of the bowie as it typically doesn't require using a thick stick as a hammer to get it to chop wood and it does give an extended range for self defense but is too big really to be used for skinning an animal and has a tendency to be much duller and easier to bend then a bowie. Ultimately it is your call but you can get all 3 of these blades of good quality and full tang for less then $20 at www.budk.com so have fun. This is Vault72 signing off............for now

I have gotten a lot of knives on sale at Big 5. Good quality knives and when they are one sale they go for a good price.
