So I found out that I have a crappy rifle, and so am now planning to sell it. What's a good rifle to replace it? I was thinking about getting a Saiga in 5.45.

Good luck trying to find ammo for it when TSHTF You might just want to switch to a rifle that uses a common rifle round or even a pistol round, depending on the main purpose of the rifle, ie...hunting small/medium/large game versus defense. If the main is defense and the minor is game hunting then a high caliber as it will cover all areas, 7.62x39mm is cheap and readily available at any gunstore or wal-mart. If hunting is the main focus then it depends on the size of the game which is determined by what is available in your area and the number of mouths you are feeding. If you are feeding for one, then a .17hmr or 9mm rifle will be fine for small/medium sized game plus it has a descent lethality against bipedal hominids I still say you either get the sks-m or an ak, the sks-m is more accurate, only slightly less expensive but wieghs a hell of alot less then the ak. Ultimately its your descision of course and the issue of availability, (just go to http://www.gunbroker.com) But be careful not to get into the recurring buying cycle of continually buying another weapon as your fancy changes rather then sticking with one, get familiar with it, upgrade it and such, then just buy more if you have to to get it out of your system but keep your go to rifle ready. Remember you can't take all your weapons with you, but on the same note it would be cruel poetic justice that someone else would find your weapons and use them against you later. So keep your number of firearms down to a minimum, a pistol, a shotgun and a rifle is all more then enough to take care of any hostile or hunting encounter without forcing you to crawl on your hands and knees from the wieght. Ammo for these weapons is a factor as well, 25 rounds for the shotgun, 5 magazine loads for the pistol and 180 rounds for the rifle if it is a high caliber, if it is a .22 or .17hmr then take 500 rounds, for a 9mm rifle then take 250 rounds. This amount of ammo should total around 6-8 pounds, a very manageable weight. This ammo should be set aside from the rest of your stockpile as this ammo is intended for a bugout scenerio. You should have more at your residence in the event of a sheltering in place scenerio.

Bullshit!! KGB had god only knows how many people in the US of A. But I am thinking about possibly getting a Saiga in 5.45 or .223. Both good calibers, and I can get surplus for both so that's good.
